This dual product/life-cycle focused, developing leadership position provides the coordination and product leadership over one or more global product platforms that a business offers for customer product selection. Product Line Engineers are most often product domain specialists with significant experience both in product engineering and customer engineering based positions with a good understanding both for how customer needs translate into technical product solutions and making decisions as a platform product expert. They work across functions partnering closely with product planning and management to align new and refreshed platform plans with market level plans as well as supporting customer teams in helping with product selection and issue management for all platform needs.

Obtains input from stakeholders such as customer engineering, marketing product planning and management, program management, product and manufacturing engineering to deliver and maintain a capable platform plan that global customer teams select and configure in their Value Package Introduction/Value Package Change (VPI/VPC) business processes.

Uses systems knowledge and product expertise to make decisions in the areas of platform architecture, risk trade-offs, platform market range capability engineering, technology integration, sub-system and component part standardization vs. proliferation, modularization, product line competitiveness for one or more product line(s) throughout the life cycle of the product platform.

Applies, improves and partners both within and outside of the technical function in processes such as Synchronized Business Planning (SBP), Product Preceding Technology (PPT), Product Planning and Management, product architecting, competitive benchmarking and Value Package Introduction (VPI).

Provides problem resolution leadership for complex systems with a high degree of ambiguity and often global business impact.

Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across function(s) within a global business unit or managing improvement across business units.

Coordinates and directs work of technical project teams, up to and including direct management of small to mid-sized teams.

Operates as the recognized multi-competency specialist or expert in a discipline or product area across a site or global business unit with responsibility for developing local talent (direct or indirect).

Coaches and mentors other engineers, project managers and cross-functional team members.

May also include academic or industry collaboration in a competency or discipline area.

Product Platform Planning and Architecting - Creates and develops a holistic product platform including key architectural feature and function variants needed to align with market level product plans of future target markets; generates alternative architectures traceable to the requirements and performs trade-off analysis in collaboration with life-cycle stakeholders to ensure a balanced and optimum platform; communicates and maintains traceable information and plans executed by product development teams.

Product Platform Development - Integrates all of the market and key customer needs of a given product platform into a comprehensive and holistic development plan; verifies platform capability for all planned and approved architectural variants within the boundaries of market use rather than the boundaries of any single customer within the target usage markets.

Product Line Information Management and Support - Maintains and communicates product line information to stakeholders including customer, service engineering teams, product planners and managers, technical and other business leaders such that intimate knowledge of a particular product line is preserved for improved application, time-to-market, and overall technical productivity and quality.

Product Line Health and Gap Management - Maintains and monitors the relative gaps or limitations of a product line through multiple stakeholder channels such as product planning and management, customer teams current product chief engineers, manufacturing and supply chain and customers; closes the gaps by partnering with Product Managers to develop improvement plans and executable projects that keep the product line aligned to current and future business expectations throughout the life cycle to obsolescence.

Product Configuration and Change Management - Establishes a baseline of identified product artifacts to be placed under configuration management; releases, tracks, controls and communicates changes from concept to obsolescence often through work requests; establishes and maintains the integrity of the product artifact baselines.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required.

Experience

Demonstrated success having worked in a Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering role on lower complexity product development activities, translating customer needs and negotiating into product development plans, technical profiles and/or product specifications. Ideal candidates should have experience both in product and customer facing roles with a proven track record of successful product decisions. In addition:

  • Uses systems knowledge and product expertise to make decisions in the areas of platform architecture, risk trade-offs, platform market range capability engineering, technology integration, sub-system and component part standardization vs. proliferation, modularization, product line competitiveness for Power Systems Controls throughout the life cycle of the product platform.

  • Define the architecture of Cummins Electronics’ products based on customer needs (CMI and external) with focus on power systems products.

  • Influence architecture for Cummins’ electronic control systems and those of external customers where CE products are used.

  • Requires frequent communication with: CE Marketing and Product Planning, Cummins global design centers (India & China) and CE customers (internal and external to Cummins).

  • Sustain broad knowledge of available and emergent technology, market drivers, and future needs

  • Apply Systems Engineering knowledge in gathering customer requirements and converting them into technical specifications

  • Provide system architecture deliverables per Cummins defined new product development processes

  • Must have knowledge of Electronic Control Systems architectures for power systems or industrial equipment markets

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
