Electrical Design Engineer

Hydrogenics, part of the Cummins Group is an industry leading developer of renewable hydrogen technology and we are currently looking to hire an Design Engineer to join us in our Oevel location.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced, Electrical Design Engineer to join a team of 15 technical experts in our innovative Technology Department; dedicated to developing new products and improving our existing product line.

Key responsibilities will include;

  • Lead on electrical design and testing of specific parts of the installations and proactively work towards advancing our existing product line.

  • Ensure that international safety regulations such as ATEX and SIL are adhered to at all times. Personally guarantee that all products meet the required electrical safety regulations in each, relevant country.

  • Provides expertise in AC/DC conversion, designs new applications and provides support of installations in the field.

  • Participate in risk- and failure analysis, providing innovative solutions where necessary.

  • Creates functional descriptions of all systems for internal use by other members of the team

  • Assists during startup and commissioning of industrial installations on client site if and when required.

To be a success in this role you will need;

  • Substantial experience in electrical design of installations, preferably on an industrial scale.

  • Either certified or demonstrable knowledge of ATEX and SIL regulations.

  • Degree qualified Electrical engineer, or qualified by substantial work experience.

  • To be an advocate for change and share your ideas in how we can improve new and existing products.

  • A highly analytical mind, driven by data with a high attention for detail.

  • You must be fluent in English to be considered. Dutch is preferred.

  • Flexible to travel 10% as and when required.

Component Failure Analysis - Analyzes specimen physical and chemical properties using applicable laboratory equipment to identify failure mode and mechanism; evaluates design intent, manufacturing, processing in accordance with established processes and operational history, print requirements, part function and failure mode to determine root cause(s); recommends corrective actions considering material limitations and manufacturing constraints to protect the customer and prevent reoccurrence.

Component Material and Process Selection - Evaluates component requirements regarding form and function in order to identify base material and processing options; selects manufacturing route and selects material and process based on best-fit option(s) aligned to requirements; validates selected material and process by defining necessary test plan to prove capability to requirements.

Non Destructive Evaluation - Interprets the results of standard test methods to identify non-conforming indications against approved acceptance criteria to inspect components; develops new test methods or probes to detect features of interest when existing methods are inadequate to successfully assess the material and/or geometry to solve problems; identifies emerging inspection technologies considering detection limits, equipment cost, and processing speed to improve inspection effectiveness.

Material Characterization - Interprets mechanical, chemical, microstructural and physical properties using laboratory equipment to confirm compliance to print, and correlates these properties with field or component test results to determine robustness; defines appropriate material characterization schedule using correct laboratory equipment to ensure requirements are met.

Joining and Bonding Science - Chooses appropriate bonding technique considering material type(s), applied loads and available bonding area to generate a durable bonded joint; develops process and inspection specifications taking base materials, bonding materials and bonding equipment into account to ensure sufficient and consistent quality; applied to multi-functional components to establish a spatially efficient joint that doesn't require disassembly.

Applies Principles of Surface Engineering - Applies material surface modification techniques to increase the load bearing capability of components; modifies the surface chemistry and mechanical properties to improve the corrosion resistance and wear resistance in a variety of chemical and thermal environments; utilizies thermal treatments, surface diffusion treatments, or hard coatings to increase surface hardness, strength, and compatibility with mating components in a variety of environments.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required. Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.


Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.

This role will work within the Technology department based in Oevel, reporting to the Technology Manager. The person in this role;

Translatestechnical requirements and product specifications to product.

Focuses on electrical design and testing of specific parts of the installations and ensure improvements of standard products.

Follows up the international rules around electrical design, ATEX and safety (SIL).

Provides expertise in AC/DC conversion, designs new applications and provides support of installations in the field.

Other tasks: participates in risk- and failure analysis, creates functional descriptions of systems, assists during startup and commissioning of industrial installations.

Additional requirements;

Experience in electrical design of installations.

Bachelor/master degree in electricity (or equivalent experience).

Fluent in English is required, fluent in Dutch is preferred.

Willingness to travel 10% internationally.
