Japan Product Engineering Leader - EBU
This product focused, developing leadership position performs established technical tasks at the sub-system and/or component level for current and future products within a given business unit or corporate area. This involves work across many steps in the product life cycle. Because of the product centered nature of this position, they are very often a central point of coordination and decision making between product line engineers, customer teams, systems engineers, purchasing, suppliers and manufacturing.
Obtains input from stakeholders such as technical managers, project leaders, other product and manufacturing engineers and supplier partners to deliver information and recommendations that lead to quality product decisions.
Uses systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the areas of technology integration, design, analysis and experimental test verification and validation for both new and current products that impact product form, functionality and overall project risk trade-offs.
Creates, manages, improves and applies processes such Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, Failure Incident Review Group (FIRG) and tools such as 7-step problem solving, design review checklist and other specialized tools required to support the processes and enable high quality decision making.
Provides problem resolution leadership for complex systems with a high degree of ambiguity and often global business impact.
Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across function(s) within a global business unit or managing improvement across business units.
Coordinates and directs work of technical project teams, up to and including direct management of small to mid-sized teams.
Operates as the recognized multi-competency specialist or expert in a discipline or product area across a site or global business unit with responsibility for developing local talent (direct or indirect).
Coaches and mentors other engineers, project managers and cross-functional team members.
May also include academic or industry collaboration in a competency or discipline area.
Product Problem Solving - Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.
Product Failure Mode Avoidance - Mitigates potential product failure modes, by identifying interfaces, functions, functional requirements, interactions, control factors, noise factors, and prioritized potential failure modes and potential failure causes for the system of interest to effectively and efficiently improve the reliability of Cummins’ products.
Product Development Execution, Monitoring and Control - Plans, schedules, coordinates and executes the activities involved in developing a product to a respectively aligned hierarchy of requirements and technical profiles; monitors and communicates across functional boundaries to meet project resource and quality expectations; ensures product capability meets or exceeds expectations and takes mitigating actions when project risks are higher than expected; understands the full product life cycle process and stakeholders.
Product Interface Management and Integration - Identifies and analyzes the interfaces and interactions across system boundaries by specifying the requirements and limits to ensure that the product meets requirements; controls the interactions across the system element boundaries by making sure that they remain within specified limits; integrates system elements by creating an integration plan, including identification of method and timing for each activity to make it easier to find, isolate, diagnose, and correct.
System Capability Engineering - Identifies system capability and risks through analysis or experimental testing of the system, sub-system, or super system in the context of its environment; negotiates and verifies requirements against capability to guide project scope and system development accordingly; assesses legacy system versus proposed new system solution capabilities and makes decisions as to how best to achieve system capability with consideration of stakeholder trade-offs.

Education, Licenses, Certifications
College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required.
This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
Demonstrated success having worked in a Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering role on lower complexity product development activities, translating customer needs and negotiating into product development plans, technical profiles and/or product specifications with a proven track record of successful product decisions.
Lead product engineering activities for Cummins engine application with clients and localized assembly in the client's Japan facilities. Frequent travel to both their manufacturing and technical facilities is expected including working directly with the personnel.
Directly support the engine development department for automotive truck application on all activities related to product release and local manufacture at facilities in Japan. This will function as a local technical project leader supporting the development project’s global program leader and Core Team members.
Work with the engine development department readiness, manufacturing, and supply team members to implement processes to release Cummins part number, option structure, and shop orders into the customer’s production system. This includes translation between Cummins and OEMs engine spec structures, change management/local plant release, and engineering release communication/approval processes.
Work with the engine development department's quality and manufacturing team members to define and complete local manufacturing plant process approval and sign-off necessary production release.
Provide day-to-day engineering support to the engine and vehicle assembly plant on any issues related prototype and initial production builds. This includes building strong working relationship with key OEM’s production plant and engineering team members.
