This is an exciting opportunity in Galesburg, Michigan for anApplied Mechanics Technical Advisor – Analytical.This applied science, developing leadership position conducts numerical computations via third party and in-house tools to determine structural performance of components and systems.Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies is where we work on industry leading engineering projects.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Utilize industry knowledge of casting and machining practices to provide feasibility assessment and directional estimates of tooling lead times and costs. Utilize industry knowledge to provide technical input on supplier capability and quality systems.

  • Collaborate with cross functional product team members that represent the end use customer, the OEM, Operations, Quality, and Service to transform requirements into casting solutions.

  • Collaborates with casting supplier, as well as PM, SCM and Quality to ensure product requirements are achieved at the time of sourcing, throughout the product development cycle, at PPAP, at SOP and over the life of the product.

  • Assess casting supplier flow simulation results, process inputs, and industry best practices to identify the optimum solutions for product function, process robustness and product cost.

  • Synchronize the work flow of the design, analysis and supplier team to achieve product goals and timing.

  • Evaluate analysis results, define design actions and/or DVP actions required to validate analytical results

  • Author casting performance specification content to clearly define supplier specifications to achieve product requirements.

  • Creates and manages software and methods.

  • Advises and guides less experienced simulation engineers. The results from the computer models are used to determine the validity of the design to meet the customer requirements. Design recommendations are then provided as needed.

  • Obtains input and negotiates with Design, Thermal Sciences, Materials and Product Validation as well as vendors and delivers key structural performance parameters like motion, load, natural frequencies, stress, design margin, life, sound power, etc. to Design and Product Validation as well as vendors.

  • Uses systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the area of structural design (materials and their processing as well as geometry) that impact structural performance (motion, load, natural frequencies, stress, design margin, life, sound power, etc.) of components and systems

  • Creates, manages, improves and applies computer modeling processes that estimate motion, load, natural frequencies, stress, design margin, life, sound power, etc. and tools such as ANSYS, FE-Safe, GT-Suite, and AVL Excite required to support the processes and enable high quality decision making. Provides problem resolution leadership for complex systems with a high degree of ambiguity and often global business impact.

  • Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across function(s) within a global business unit or managing improvement across business units.

  • Coordinates and directs work of technical project teams, up to and including direct management of small to mid-sized teams.

  • Operates as the recognized multi-competency specialist or expert in a discipline or product area across a site or global business unit with responsibility for developing local talent (direct or indirect).

  • Coaches and mentors other engineers, project managers and cross-functional team members.

Applies Principles of Noise and Acoustics - Determines the acoustic behavior of components and systems via numerical modeling and/or physical measurements; evaluates both air and structure borne noise, sound power levels, sound quality, flexible body motion, and natural frequencies to draw conclusions that influence design decisions with internal and external customers.

Applies Principles of Dynamics and Vibration - Determines motion of components and systems via numerical modeling and/or physical measurements; evaluates rigid and flexible body motion, natural frequencies, mode shapes, displacements, velocities, accelerations, friction, and wear to draw conclusions that influence design decisions with internal and external customers.

Product Systems Modeling and Analysis - Impacts product design decisions to best meet stakeholder's requirements through the utilization and interpretation of numerical tools and methods that predict the performance of a component or system.

Systems Modeling and Simulation - Identifies representation of a system or system element by using suitable analytical tools and techniques in order to derive knowledge about the real system; defines the strategy for modeling, simulation, and analysis of a system or system element by considering specifics of a given situation or nature of the system of interest in order to derive insights for making quality decisions.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required. Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

Experience

Prior Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving, quality decision making and providing technical direction and leadership to a project team(s).

Preferred candidates would have a mix of experience using MS Office tools, Matlab, Python, APDL-ANSYS, FORTRAN or C programming, Windows/Linux operating systems, and desktop/remote high performance computing hardware systems.

Base salary commensurate with experience
