The Simulation Automation Integrator would be a member of the Corporate Simulation Based Product Development (SBPD) Team and would work in partnership with all Business Units (BU's) within Cummins to enable the acceleration and impact of increased Automation within Simulation work flows. Automation tools and methods are implemented to improve engineering efficiency, reduce rework and variation in results, eliminate manual transferring of outputs and inputs across models, and most importantly - bring simulation closer to the broader populace of decision makers influencing product design decisions. As we work together with the BU's to synthesize these efforts at the Corporate level, the Simulation Automation Integrator will support BU-specific improvement efforts and/or common cross-BU efforts that accelerate the changes within the enterprise under the Simulation Based Product Development (SBPD) initiative.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Obtains input and negotiates with Design, Thermal Sciences, Materials and Product Validation and delivers key structural performance parameters like motion, load, natural frequencies, stress, design margin, life, sound power, etc. to Design and Product Validation.

  • Makes decisions in the area of structural design (materials and their processing as well as geometry) that impact structural performance (motion, load, natural frequencies, stress, design margin, life, sound power, etc.) of components and systems.

  • Applies and improves computer modeling processes that estimate motion, load, natural frequencies, stress, design margin, life, sound power, etc. and tools such as ANSYS, FE-Safe, GT-Suite, and AVL Excite required to support the processes and enable high quality decision making.

  • Provides independent leadership of smaller business impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems or services with greater elements of ambiguity over the senior or lead engineer level and with full accountability to the project team.

  • Delivers independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge.

  • Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across a functional discipline area within a business unit site.

  • Coordinates and directs work amongst technicians and temporary student employees, assists in the transfer of knowledge to lesser experienced engineers through either indirect (scope of influence) or direct management of a small, local group of engineers.

  • Provides support and guidance to influence technical direction within a project team and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.

  • Operates as a recognized specialist in a discipline or product area within the immediate team.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

Skills

  • Applies Principles of Fatigue and Durability - Determines life of components and systems via numerical modeling and/or physical measurements; evaluates component temperatures, natural frequencies, mode shapes, displacements, strains/stresses, wear, and fatigue life to draw conclusions that influence design decisions with internal and external customers.

  • Applies Principles of Noise and Acoustics - Determines the acoustic behavior of components and systems via numerical modeling and/or physical measurements; evaluates both air and structure borne noise, sound power levels, sound quality, flexible body motion, and natural frequencies to draw conclusions that influence design decisions with internal and external customers.

  • Applies Principles of Dynamics and Vibration - Determines motion of components and systems via numerical modeling and/or physical measurements; evaluates rigid and flexible body motion, natural frequencies, mode shapes, displacements, velocities, accelerations, friction, and wear to draw conclusions that influence design decisions with internal and external customers.

  • Product Systems Modeling and Analysis - Impacts product design decisions to best meet stakeholder's requirements through the utilization and interpretation of numerical tools and methods that predict the performance of a component or system.

  • Product Problem Solving - Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.

  • Systems Modeling and Simulation - Identifies representation of a system or system element by using suitable analytical tools and techniques in order to derive knowledge about the real system; defines the strategy for modeling, simulation, and analysis of a system or system element by considering specifics of a given situation or nature of the system of interest in order to derive insights for making quality decisions.

  • Decision quality - Making good and timely decisions that keep the organization moving forward.

  • Drives results - Consistently achieving results, even under tough circumstances.

  • Communicates effectively - Developing and delivering multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.

  • Builds networks - Effectively building formal and informal relationship networks inside and outside the organization.

  • Resourcefulness - Securing and deploying resources effectively and efficiently.

  • Manages complexity - Making sense of complex, high quantity, and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required.

  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience

Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Preferred candidates would have a mix of experience using MS Office tools, Matlab, Python, APDL-ANSYS, FORTRAN or C programming, Windows/Linux operating systems, and desktop/remote high performance computing hardware systems.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation for this role is $8,000/month (subject to applicable withholdings), plus benefits such as health and wellness while in the returnship program.
